Conflicting information
Conflicting information is hard to deal with. Getting information from different places telling you to different things. Then you have to make a judgement call about which source of information is more trustworthy or more right for your specific situation. It is a little frustrating and it would be nice if there was one clear direction to take….alas that is not the situation we are in.
Conflicting Diet Information
Keto:
As mentioned in a pervious post there is some passionate information about Keto coming out of Boston College from this guy and caners’ energy requirements of glucose and cancers’ inability to process your body’s other energy source of ketones. As a side note before this whole adventure I would run around 210 lbs. I am down to 181 (with a very weird weight reading last weekend at 174 (which I did measure twice) so that is a strange anomaly)
Wider variety of foods:
I got to meet with one of the dietitians from DFCI The school of thought here is about your micro-biome and our body’s ability to fight cancer and prevent cancer from starting. They are pushing for a more balanced diet plan. The dietitian also gave me a ton of reading which I will consume, digest (pun intended), and summarize to y'all later. The Nutritionist is questioning Keto with what is the end game? When and how do you stop? The nutritionist didn't mention it but cachexia is a thing that needs to be paid attention to.
Conflicting Spine Information
As Mentioned in my "Wins" post the only place (supposedly) that brain cancer can spread to is your spine. I got a full spine MRI and something came back on it that was suspicious. My NO (Neuro Oncologist as it is abbreviated in the community) said that she was not worried about it nor was the Radiologist and that if it were them they would probably not pursue it further as it is most likely scaring from my skiing accident when I was 16. I get a call from out of the blue on Thursday from my NO saying that they need now to pursue it.....which was a bit concerning and stress invoking. I was getting my weekly EKG and bloodwork done on August 1st and scheduled the new scan to dive deeper into this thing on my spine further. After sitting on that for a bit I have the scan moved up to this Sunday to rip off the Band-Aid and get this over with. I've also learned that CT scan is the same as a CAT scan. All of these scan types makes me want to research more about the different types of scans. The PET scan has never been mentioned (yet) in this adventure, I should understand what that scan is as well….but that will be for later.
Seems to be conflicting information from what I when my spine MRI first got back. The initial was along the lines of: “We are not worried at all and you (Ted) will need to decide if it is worth more ionizing radiation exposure to look into this” vs. now: “We need to get this checked out” so something changed. Either they saw something new or there is a protocol that my NO didn't know about. Should have results Sunday or Monday...more excitement!
Processed meat:
That looks sooo good doesn't it....I want it! And I want an Italian sub....maybe another Dino's special that would be so good right now...I am getting hungry typing and thinking about this.
A large percentage of my body mass I am sure is made up from deli meat sandwiches. They were a staple growing up, I eat them for a cheap lunch at work to save money, I give them to my kids….which makes the fact that deli meat is considered a processed meat and processed meat is considered a group 1 known carcinogen. Is it as dangerous as smoking or using Round-Up? No but it is still not a great plan. (that picture above is not what I would have but the thought of Katz just keeps coming up). It is surprising to me how this fact is not known by the majority of people here in the States (maybe this is a known fact elsewhere?) or it is being purposely not talked about (I want to say covered up, but I won’t fully put on my radiation blocking tin-foil hat quite yet with this one (which I actually found out that tin-foil is actually not a great radiation blocking material and the most viable would be polyethylene (for hats at least (not that I have been researching it, really...i swear….yeah…))))
